Welcome to Murder One

Welcome

Welcome to Murder One, Europe¹s foremost and oldest crime and mystery bookshop, in business since August 1988. We stock ALL crime titles in print in both the UK and the USA as a matter of policy, and should we be missing out on something specific we will do our best to obtain and stock it. We also feature a major romance section (Heartlines), run along similar lines. We also have extensive true crime, reference, Sherlock Holmes and second hand and out of print sections as well as all the important magazines in the field and a growing DVD section featuring noir movies, TV series (from regions 1 & 2), etc...

This site includes regular updates, highlights of books we think you should really be reading, notice of author events, news of forthcoming releases, etc... As our stock is so large, it is not all featured here as we prefer to focus on new books, but do not hesitate to contact us if you are seeking a particular title. We might well have it or know how to procure it.

Our mail-order department is an integral part of the business and we have almost two decades of experience supplying books all over the world. Although, due to lack of physical space, the store no longer stocks science fiction, fantasy and horror, we STILL supply these books on catalogue, and you will also find a new Historical fiction section, which we are trying out.

Please contact us if you have any comments on this site, suggestions, queries about the areas of books we cover.

Enjoy!

Trisha will be away from 1/1/08 - 31/3/08

Our latest Exciting Event: A Signing With Sherilyn Kenyon

For those of you who couldn’t join us on Sunday 30th December to meet Sherrilyn Kenyon just see what you missed out on:

I didn’t know that we could fit that many people in Murder One!

When I said yes to a Sherrilyn Kenyon signing not only was I worried about the date (30th December 2007) but had visions of just me & Sherrilyn chatting by ourselves for most of the two hours. I hadn’t known what to expect really, I mean, Sherrilyn was popular, but when I started fielding calls from anxious Kenyon fans whose plane from Ireland arrived three hours before the shop opened for business (‘is there anywhere I can go for a coffee?’), I knew there was going to be trouble.

At a Japanese restaurant the night before, where I had furtively scurried, desperate to finish Upon the Midnight Clear, Sherrilyn’s latest, before I met the lady herself, I was spotted by two Goth girls at the next table. I knew something was up when one of them started eyeballing the distinctive Piatkus book cover. After we had all become acquainted over Pad Thai noodles and Asahi beer, I was given the low down on everything “Sherry”. So I turned up at the store the next day for the event an hour beforehand, trying desperately to be Goth - my black mascara and heavy eyeliner making me look like a racoon, and running ever so slightly every time I went into a coughing fit (my Christmas parcels from Canada lost in the post but I managed to get a wonderful cold for the holidays!) to find two fans already queuing. By the time we opened at 12pm we had a queue of fans going down the street & in the end we had almost 100 people file into Murder One (through the romance department, around the till, and out down the street) from all over the UK. Pictures were taken, Christmas-y mulled wine was drunk (and coffee, to warm up those who had to wait in a line outside while fans slowly progressed towards Sherrilyn in a sort-of demonic conga line (one fan had real fangs! I’m not kidding! She showed me!), books were snapped up and stock was signed.

Everything seemed to run relatively smoothly. Sherrilyn was all southern hospitality and chatted with fans for hours, (fans chatted to one another while waiting in line & a big thank-you to you all for making it such a great event) as if she never wanted to go home, as if she mustn’t be incredibly tired and possibly still jet-lagged. A brief foray to our sister store, Forbidden Planet for extra stock (who knew that everybody was going to be clamouring for The Dark Hunter Companion?) and I was pleased to see a couple of guys in line (and I have reason to believe they weren’t only there for the girlfriends they accompanied). It seems that Sherrilyn’s books incorporate the type of dark fantasy romance that is just a damn good read: no two ways about it. Once the raffle died down and people shuffled back out of the shop, I knew it must have been a good time (if only I could have remembered any of it. It went like a whirlwind of activity. I think my head was spinning!).

It was great to have her at the shop. She’s a rock star. Perhaps this year, The Year of Acheron, we’ll even get her back for an encore? But this time we’ll have to move into a bigger venue, some candlelight, red velvet, gorgeous caped men with blood drenched fangs, a little music ... stay tuned ...
